How we choose gardening equipment.

gardening.equipment is a buying guide, not a test laboratory. Our recommendations rest on three pillars: a durability framework applied consistently to every tool, the published specifications of the manufacturers themselves, and the working consensus of gardeners who have carried these tools for decades. This page sets out exactly how each recommendation is earned — and what we deliberately do not claim.

Pillar 1 — The four-question durability framework

Before any tool enters our coverage, it has to be evaluable against four questions. These are the same questions we believe every buyer should ask, and they decide whether a piece of gardening equipment is built to last a season or a generation:

  1. Forged or stamped? Forged construction (hot-hammered from a single piece of steel) outlasts and outperforms stamped sheet-metal construction across virtually every cutting and digging tool.
  2. Replaceable parts? A tool whose blade, spring, or handle can be replaced individually is a tool a gardener will own for decades. A tool with no parts catalogue is a tool you will throw away.
  3. Real warranty? The warranty has to be specific (clear claim mechanism, named address, defined coverage) and honoured in practice — not a marketing line on a brochure.
  4. Manufacturer continuity? A brand with multi-decade continuous production of the same product line is a brand whose tool you can still service in twenty years.

Pillar 2 — Manufacturer-published specifications

Where we cite a specific specification — blade length, mass, steel grade, warranty term, country of manufacture — the figure comes from the manufacturer's own published documentation (product page, spec sheet, parts catalogue, or owner's manual). We do not run an instrumented test bench. We do not publish measurements we have not made ourselves on equipment a third party has provided for that purpose.

When a manufacturer's spec is unverifiable or has changed across model years, we say so.

Pillar 3 — Gardener consensus and working tradition

Some of the most important things to know about a piece of gardening equipment are not in any spec sheet: how it feels in the hand after the two-hundredth cut, whether the spring tires after a decade, whether the handle survives ten winters in an unheated shed, which retailer ships fastest, which model is the small-hand version. For these we lean on the accumulated gardener consensus visible across long-running gardening forums, trade publications, and the lived experience of our editorial team and the contributor network we are building.

We mark these passages clearly as judgement rather than measurement. You should read them the way you would read a working gardener's notebook, not the way you would read a laboratory report.

What we deliberately do not claim

  • We do not claim we have run head-to-head bench tests on a measured cuts-to-resharpen, cut-force, or fatigue-load basis. Such testing requires equipment we don't operate.
  • We do not claim we have run ergonomic studies (EMG, grip-force, joint-load measurement). We don't.
  • We do not claim quantitative comparative performance ("Brand A's edge lasts 3.2× longer than Brand B's") unless that figure is taken from a peer-reviewed source or from the manufacturer's own published comparison — and in that case we cite the source.
  • We do not claim editorial relationships with publications (Gardens Illustrated, Wirecutter, etc.) unless those relationships actually exist.
  • We do not invent editor names, test dates, or test gardens.

If you ever find a claim on this site that violates one of these rules, please email contact@skaldos.com. We treat it as a serious correction and publish the fix with a dated note.

How recommendations are written

Each recommendation page (whether a single-tool reference page or a multi-tool buying guide) follows a consistent structure:

  1. Identification — exact model, brand, country of manufacture, key specifications from the manufacturer.
  2. Framework application — explicit answers to the four durability questions.
  3. Recommendation — our judgement on who this tool is right for, who it isn't, and what we would buy instead at adjacent budgets.
  4. Where to buy — links to the retailer we trust most for that specific tool. Affiliate links are clearly labelled with rel="sponsored nofollow" and a visible disclosure.

How recommendations evolve

Every recommendation page carries an updated date in its header. We review every page at least twice a year — once in spring and once in autumn — to verify model availability, current pricing range, and continued accuracy of the manufacturer specifications. Discontinued products are clearly flagged; superseded models are linked to their replacements.

As our editorial network grows, this methodology will expand to include direct multi-season tool use by named contributors, with the lived findings clearly attributed and dated. Where we add direct experiential claims, we will mark them as such.
